First day of school in ‘Cinderella County’ off to a great start

DPI, Guyana, Monday, September 3, 2018

The new school year was off to a rainy start, nevertheless, children, parents and even teachers arose and prepared themselves for a fruitful day ahead.

Of course, the first day of school is never the same for all.  For some, it is just the start of years of hard work, while for others, it is the final year between an exciting school life and the working world.

The Department of Public Information (DPI), this morning, travelled to Region Two in an effort to be a part of the back to school experience on the Essequibo Coast.

The first stop was to the Cotton Field Nursery School, located approximately half a mile south of Anna Regina. For these children, being away from their home and parents for the first time, the brightly coloured teaching aids and caring teachers all aided in making the transition process more delightful. For these new starters, colours and graphics added more to a memorable experience.

A visit was later made to the Anna Regina Secondary; the institution with the most outstanding academic performance within the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region. First formers were captivated, as they gazed upon the freshly painted building, which towered over them. Cognisant that new faces and new experiences awaited them, they wasted no time in interacting with each other.

While the first-year students are preparing for five years of intense studying, fifth-year students shared that they plan to this their final year at the institution. Some of the students expressed the belief that this being their final school year, beacons the need for greater work and determination academically.

Several teachers in Region Two, Pomeroon-Supenaam participated in the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) strike action today. The protest was staged in front of the region’s Department of Education, Cotton Field.
