The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is prepared for the holding of Local Government Elections (LGE) on November 12, according to Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield.
The CEO told journalists last Friday that the elections body is in “good stead” for the upcoming polls.
“GECOM is prepared as it can be within the letter of the law. We have ensured that all the legal arrangements are in place,” he told the media at the Critchlow Labour College.
According to Lowenfield, some $1.6Million has been approved for the holding of the elections.
“As we stand (52) days prior (to elections), we are in very good stead in so far as these elections go. Notwithstanding money and issues before the court. We are working within the confines of the approved budget for the conduct of these elections,” he said.
Lowenfield added, “With regards to the noise being made about funding, we are spending the money available to us.” He stated GECOM is doing “a fairly good job” as is. He said stakeholders are becoming accustomed to elections being run within a specified period and, according to him, that is a positive sign.
“So, we will be out here whenever the stipulated statutory period comes around for the conduct of the elections. GECOM will be here ready to execute.”
