Govt will ensure all communities have acceptable standards – Min. Gaskin

— stresses the importance of youth development at community meeting

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 25, 2019

The government hosted yet another successful ‘Government comes to you’ outreach today. Scores of residents of Region 5 attended the event hosted in the compound of the Fort Wellington Regional Democratic Council (RDC) office. Public Service Minister-designate, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley and Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin travelled to the community of No. 5 as part of the fan-out exercise where they met with residents and listened to their concerns.

Minister Gaskin told the residents that the issues in the community are like other communities across the country and stated that it stems from “many many years of neglect” and no government with the best of intentions can resolve the matters in a short time.

He, however, assured that the government will “ensure that all the communities in Guyana meet an acceptable and decent standard of living.”

Many residents were concerned about the state of the field used for recreational purposes and the development of the youth in the community as well as the need to upgrade the amenities such as the fence and washroom.

The Business Minister stressed the importance of youth development further noting the role sport plays, suggesting that a committee be established to oversee the maintenance of the facility.

“A committee should be formally established to take responsibility for the ground and to be accountable for it.”

Minister Gaskin further recommended that the organisation follow the lead of the Mackenzie Sports Club and liaise with the responsible government agency.

Requests were also made to construct a multipurpose centre on one section of the ground. Minister Gaskin assured that the request would be passed onto the relevant ministry.
