Over 100 exploration wells are expected to be drilled in South America, and Guyana is among several countries that are listed to have the deepest and most complex wells.

According to an article posted on Guyana’s leading oil and gas news website, a Norway-based Rystad Energy report noted recently that outside of Brazil, over the next seven years, most of the oil-related activities could be found in the North.

The regions of Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and even offshore Colombia, Rystad said are opening new opportunities and markets for the industry.

Rystad said the numbers indicate that more than 50 wells will be drilled in South America in water depths of over 1,000 metres until 2023.

Noteworthy, the company pointed out that while many of these countries, including Guyana have little experience in drilling wells in ultra-deep water, the operators, among them ExxonMobil, have good track records in drilling deepwater exploration wells.

The analyst brings attention to the fact that until ExxonMobil had success with finding oil in the Liza field outside of Guyana in the Stabroek block, the offshore area north of South America was dominated by gas discoveries.

“It is also interesting how the offshore activity in the area has been concentrated to Trinidad and Tobago waters, with only a few exceptions. It also shows the relative size of the discoveries in Guyana and is by far the largest oil discoveries made in this part of the world,” Rystad pointed out.

The Liza Phase 1 development, which will bring first oil for Guyana, is located approximately 190 kilometres offshore in water depths of 1500 – 1900 metres. Four drill centres are envisioned with 17 wells in total; eight production wells, six water injection wells and three gas injection wells. Oil production will get underway by 2020.
