Housing & Water Ministers consult with GWI to discuss 2020 budget

─ more projects in the pipeline

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, August 12, 2020

Today, Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal, and Minister within the Ministry, Hon. Susan Rodrigues, met with senior officers of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) to discuss budgetary plans for the fiscal year of 2020.

Managing Director (ag.) of GWI, Nigel Niles, indicated that the strategic plan covered five years from 2017-2021 and entailed short, medium, and long-term projections.

Further, he said his team would concentrate mainly on water sustainability and supply, leaks, and maintenance and proposed the rehabilitation of distribution networks.

Moreover, meter coverage is expected to be expanded in several communities, including Providence, East Bank Demerara and La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

The meter coverage will improve services and increase water flow, while cutting revenue losses, a problem the company has endured for years.

Also, in the pipeline, is the drilling of wells in Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara; Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, and Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, among other areas.

Other personnel at the meeting included Finance Director, Dharmendra Dharmo; Hinterland Director, Ramchand Jailall; and Programme Manager, Arshad Yacoub.
