After years of calling for a marker to be erected at the junction of Duncan Street and Bel Air, Georgetown, the residents of Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown, on Tuesday, unveiled a road sign.
The unveiling was attended by Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine, Deputy Mayor, Alfred Mentore and Chairman of the Lamaha Gardens Community Co-op Society, Ronald Ally.
The City Works Committee came in for commendation by the mayor for the installation of the sign as he assured the residents that new council will work to have Georgetown retain the title of being the ‘Garden City’.
He highlighted the importance of residents in all communities working to maintain a clean environment.
“I encourage residents to be responsible…. When you see someone throw garbage out of a vehicle, call them and ask them to pick it up; be ambassadors,” Mayor Narine urged.
In the meantime, works are in the pipeline to restore several communities in both commercial or residential areas. This was disclosed by the Deputy Mayor who further urged persons to respect and upkeep land covenant.
“I was mandated by the Mayor to be the conveyor for a National Capital Planning Commission aim to deal with zoning and regularisation of several communities. We have been working to bring about the various changes, and we are happy that the people in the community have been doing their part to take the bold steps to develop their community,” Mentore said.
President of the Lamaha Gardens Community Co-op Society, Ronald Ally said the installation of the sign aims to restore order and a sense of place, consistent with the expectation of living in a residential neighbourhood. “This is a step to say to we the residents, value orderliness and environmental decency in our community.”
Ally applauded the efforts of the Mayor and City Council since permission for the sign was sought in July 2017. He noted that residents of Lamaha Gardens will fully cooperate to fulfil the status of as a residential community.
