DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, November 13, 2018

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has scored the most points at the recently held Local Government Elections (LGE) in Mahdia, Potaro-Sipuruni, allowing them to secure five seats for the municipality.

According to the official results released by the Guyana Elections Commissions (GECOM), APNU won three seats in the First Past the Post (FTPT) system and two seats for the Proportional Representation (PR). The total number of votes secured was 253. Its partner, the Alliance For Change (AFC), secured one seat for both the FPTP and for the PR systems with 96 votes in all. While the People’s Progressive Party/Civic was able to secure one seat for the PR with 91 votes.

This was the first LGE for Mahdia since receiving its township status last month.

Over in Lethem in Region Nine, the polls were closed promptly at 18:00hrs after last-minute voters rushed in to cast their ballots. By 22:00hrs, all the results were in at Lethem’s GECOM office but PPP/C candidates and supporters were already celebrating after witnessing the statement of polls that was issued at each station.

The preliminary results indicated that PPP/C is likely to be given six seats on the town council (three councillors, three Proportional Reps) and APNU four seats (two councillors, two Proportional Reps).

This the second time the Local Government Elections is being held when constitutionally due after being resuscitated in 2016 following an absence of 22 years.
