Residents of Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam were, on Friday, encouraged to make the wise decision at the upcoming 2020 elections. This call was made by Minister within the Ministry of Communities, with the responsibility for Housing, Hon. Annette Ferguson.

Minister within the Ministry of Communities, with responsibility for Housing, Hon. Annette Ferguson speaking to the residents of Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam.

While speaking to the residents Minister Ferguson detailed the many successful projects completed under the Coalition Government over the past four years. She noted the installation of much-needed streetlights, a regular supply of treated water and the rehabilitation of many of the main access roads in the Berbice communities.

Additionally, it was highlighted that the East Berbice-Corentyne Region benefited from the major boosts in the country’s Education Sector; the Health system is second to none in the region and over 200 land titles were recently distributed to Berbice residents, Minister Ferguson reminded.

Importantly, she noted that under the current administration two successful Local Government Elections (LGE) were conducted.

“This was made possible so that the residents within the different communities can select their respective community leaders. These leaders hold the responsibility of ensuring all the residents’ needs and concerns are addressed,” the minister emphasised.

Discussing the recent increase of the minimum wage for public servants, Minister Ferguson noted:

“Over the past four years, public servants received a 77% increase in their minimum wage. This moves us from receiving $39,000 monthly to $70,000, and this was made possible under the APNU+AFC leadership.” She also clarified, “the government did not take away bonuses, but instead granted an of increase of salary which public servants will receive monthly instead of receiving once yearly [Christmas time].”

While encouraging the residents to make a wise choice in 2020, Minister Ferguson said:

“Berbice has benefitted tremendously from many developments under the Coalition Government, however, more still needs to be done so that the resident of this region can enjoy a good life but this can be possible only with the return of the Coalition Government to office.”
