M&CC seeking to continue works at Kitty Market
DPI, Guyana, Friday, August 24, 2018
The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is seeking to continue aspects of the infrastructural restoration works to the Kitty Market.
The $240 Million project, based on the engineer’s estimate, caters for over 100 stalls, including fresh fruits and vegetables, a fish/meat section, clothing and grocery vending. Plans also include the creation of a public health department, market clerk’s office and revenue collection section; a conference hall to host community events. The City Council also intends to power the market with solar energy, whilst the central air conditioning system will be powered by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).
Deputy Town Clerk, Sharon Harry, told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that while the administration is willing to complete the works slated for the market, it is aware of its available revenue.
“We are at the stage where the ministry had done a certain aspect of the restoration work and currently the administration is seeking to continue other aspects of it, but since everything depends on the amount of revenue that we have available, we always have to be cognisant,” Harry explained.
She noted while there is no date set for the re-commencement the works at the market, the Council is hopeful that the works can be completed soon.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Communities signed a $25 million contract with BML Architects & Engineers Consultancy & Contracting Services, for Phase One of the rehabilitation of the Kitty Market.
Established in 1882, the Kitty Market was established in 1882, two years after the Bourda Market was built.
