Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson has pledged her ministry’s intervention to help clear a canal to improve drainage in the community of Friendship, in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

On Wednesday, Minister Ferguson visited communities along the Pomeroon River; during her outreach, residents of Friendship shared their concern about the silted canal.

“I discussed with the residents that the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, even though it is not under our remit, we will try to see what immediate assistance we can give to the people,” Minister Ferguson explained.

Reginald Mannie, a resident of Friendship noted that the canal running through the community is in need of desilting. “If government can afford, we build two outlets to the sea because when the rain falls we take a very long time to get draw off,” he noted.

Minister Ferguson said she will also be in discussion with regional authorities of Region Two to examine how the ministry can collaborate with the region “to address the immediate needs of the people here in Friendship”.

The minister noted that there is potential for development in the Pomeroon. “I guess with us bringing some sort of relief I know that we would see more activities, more farming, more of the produce heading towards the market,” Minister Ferguson said.
