Min. Norton initiates inter-county circle tennis tournament

The Honourable Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton on Sunday, spearheaded a friendly Circle Tennis Tournament featuring youth groups from the three counties – Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice.

The first game, which was initially scheduled to be played at a Korthberaadt Playfield on the East Bank of Berbice, was relocated to the No. 63 Beach, Corentyne, Berbice, due to heavy rains.

The idea for a friendly ‘Arrival Day’ tournament was conceived by Minister Norton, who had previously donated uniforms and circle tennis gears to all three youth clubs, namely – the Flying Stars Unity Force from Berbice, the Houston Youth Group and the Visionary Youth Group from Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

During the exciting match up, the Houston team defeated the Berbice team, before they were defeated by the Visionary Youth Group from Parika. Another game is scheduled to be hosted at Parika on May 27, 2019.

“It was a very exciting game, and I believe the mingling and the comradery that was ignited among the teams was really wonderful. Many of them became friends and that’s what it’s about – creating friendships and fostering good relationships among different peoples,” Minister Norton said.

The Minister said that he was very pleased to see that the donated gears have gone to good use.

“I am really impressed by the way the teams played and I am truly glad that I was able to assist these groups with their uniforms and equipment,” Minister Norton noted.
