Minister of Education celebrates academic achievements of First Assembly of God members

Last Saturday, the First Assembly of God Wortmanville Church hosted a ‘Celebration Day’ at its Georgetown location for its members who sat the recent National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and other recent examinations at the University of Guyana and other tertiary institutions.

The Chief Education Officer, Rev. Dr. Marcel Hutson who is a member of the church’s clergy, said that such recognition is critical since research indicates that recognition for effort and success improves motivation and encourages participation.

He said that the awardees or celebrants are more than deserving of honour. “Many of them braved the Covid-19 pandemic to emerge successfully at the National Grade Six Assessment, the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations and also gained certificates, diplomas and degrees from tertiary institutions locally and abroad,” Dr. Hutson noted.

The Honourable Minister of Education Priya Manickchand who was also present and delivered remarks thanked the church for celebrating the students and underscored the importance of the role of the family in each child’s development. She expanded that the church is the extended family of each student who is a member and sometimes it is the only support group for many. The Minister told the congregation that the pandemic has exposed how very weak some home structures are and just how important it is for institutions and bodies to be proactive.

The church awarded and honoured Sixty-Eight (68) members for outstanding performances at various examinations and other academic achievements.
