Ministry of Labour investigates fatality at John Fernandes’ Wharf
Reports reaching the Ministry of Labour have indicated that there has been a recent workplace accident at the John Fernandes Wharf which resulted in one fatality.
According to the information received, the dead man who was identified as 36-year-old Sheldon Wilson, a truck driver for the Guyana Stockfeeds Inc. was proceeding to the assembly point of the wharf to offload feed from the truck. He drove the vehicle off the wharf partially into the river and reports from eyewitnesses indicated that Wilson appeared to be convulsing when he drove the truck off the wharf.
The Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department of the Ministry of Labour has commenced its investigations into this accident and it will continue.
The Honourable Minister of Labour, Mr. Joseph Hamilton has once again expressed his ongoing concern about these workplace fatalities and over time has stressed the need for increased OSH awareness programmes in workplaces.
The Minister further extends his condolences to the grieving relatives and friends of the deceased.
