MoPH recognises NGSA students
─ parents employed with the ministry
– ministry’s first initiative of recognising children of staff

The Ministry of Public Health has taken the initiative to recognise 14 children of its staff who sat the recent National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examinations in April 2019.

The children received a bookbag filled with school supplies including calculators, geometry sets, notepads, folders, staplers and other stationery along with a lunch pack. These are just some critical supplies they would need as they turn out to school on September 2.
One parent, Sharon Carmichael, who works in the ministry’s planning department has noted that this recognition will go a far way for some parents who will no longer have to worry about purchasing these items for their child as back to school shopping intensifies.
Eleven-year-old Akeela Smith, who is an aspiring doctor – the boldest among the group of children, commended the ministry for the gesture. “I used to attend West Ruimveldt Primary School… the school I received was West Demerara Secondary School and I got 479 [marks]… I would like to thank Ministry of Public Health for the gift; it will go towards my new school year.”
Another beneficiary, Alister Thomas who was a little shy said he was also happy to receive the school supplies. This aspiring cricketer who has a passion for the sport is determined to meet his goal and believes that staying in school is key to achieving this.
Minister of Public Health, Hon. Volda Lawrence said that this notable deed highlights the importance of education to youth. She added that it should serve as an incentive for the students to complete their secondary school education and prepare for their future. The minister enforced the call for them to stay in school and make their education a priority.
“This little ceremony is not about us it’s about you. Your parents who work within the ministry. They work very hard to ensure that we can give service to all the people across Guyana and this is just a small way in which we can give back to them. We are giving back to them through you because we see you as the next leaders whether it is in the health sector or any other sector or even at the presidential level,” Minister Lawrence said.
