MOU signed between GCCI and M&CC

─ no one can stand alone – City Mayor

DPI, Guyana, Friday, May 3, 2019

General rates, public security in the city, building codes, infrastructural development, environment, public education, awareness and information sharing along with training and capacity building are the areas that will be covered by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on May 2.

Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine said the M&CC has created history by taking the bold step to be collaborating with the private sector and is of the view that this is the way forward for Georgetown. “This can only happen in collaboration; no one can stand on their feet alone, the weight to carry the city, is not a one-man show.”

Meanwhile GCCI President, Deygoo Boyer says he anticipates a great partnership as he looks forward to working with the M&CC. “The Georgetown Chamber has a vested interest in seeing that the city does well.”

Signing unto this MOU will enable the M&CC to have many other projects completed in collaboration with the private sector. This comes on the heels of several proposals being made to central government and M&CC not receiving all the help they needed over the years.

This initiative is in keeping with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 11; Sustainable cities and communities, which involves investment in public transport, creating green public spaces, and improving urban planning and management in a way that is both participatory and inclusive.
