New Silver City Secondary School student Aquila Handy, was, on Saturday evening, crowned Miss Linden Teen Ambassador at the Linden Town Week Teen Pageant. She competed against five other delegates, who represented Secondary Schools across Linden.
Handy was previously crown Miss New Silver City Secondary and was the only delegate to enter the pageant, with prior experience. Giving her stiff competition and copping the title of first and second runners-up respectively, were Mekeda Richardson of Wisburg Secondary and Shajadah Momplaisir of the Linden Technical Institute. The remaining three delegates who, while not placing in the top three, still delivered and represented their schools well, were Tonya Belle of the Linden School of Excellence, Bonita Veveruis of the Harmony Secondary and Niasha Motayne also of the Harmony Secondary School.
The teen pageant, which was held at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, was at a twist to the signature LTW pageant. The show was the brainchild of Linden Mayor, Waneka Arrindell who believes that the new concept would encourage teenagers to become ambassadors in their schools and communities. Mayor Arrindell opined that the positive impact they can have on their peers can help to curb the social ills that are common among the youth.
The pageant comprised six segments, all of which Handy executed well. Though she was not the crowd’s favourite, she stood her ground and delivered excellently, eloquently and confidently in all segments.
The opening segment took the form of a Caribbean costume exhibition, which saw the delegates showcasing beautifully adorned costumes to the beat of Carib Soca Monarch, Brandon Harding’s 2018 hit, ‘Alive’. This was followed by the career segment where the delegates modelled the attire representing their various career choices. The talent segment took the crowd by storm as the delegates laid it all out on the stage with their talented performance in song, dance and dramatic skits.
However, it was the evening gown segment that left the crowd gasping. With eloquence and poise, the girls gracefully modelled their beautifully arrayed gowns, most of which were designed by Lindeners. In this segment, Miss LTI, Shadaya Momplasir, was the crowd’s favourite. This was followed by the intelligent segment in which Handy outperformed her fellow contestants. The delegates were trained by pageant guru Pamela Dillon.
The teen pageant forms part of the calendar events observing Linden Town Week which officially kicks off tonight with a grand cultural extravaganza.
