Nurturing children’s growth and development through play

The Children of the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Paediatric Unit were treated to an exciting day of fun and games made possible by Mark Lewis, former Chief Public Safety Officer of the hospital, partnering with Bravo Arts to bring a host of activities for the children.
These activities include face painting, instant photos, a craft station, balloon twisting and other craft, a life-sized Snake and Ladder and other games. There was also the special appearance of Paw Patrol Chase Mascot.
With about 20 children present, the Paediatric Unit soon became a hive of activity for joyful faces as most of the children upon seeing the artists from Bravo Arts, queued to have their faces painted. Soon after, the children turned their attention to a bunch of inflated balloons of which every child fancied.
The activity was born out of Lewis’ desire to give back to his former place of work. “I took this initiative because of the fact that there is a need for play and games, in the sense of assisting with the recovery of the children in this Paediatric ward. Therefore, this collaboration is an initiative to assist in the development and recovery of those patients.” Lewis explained.
It is not unusual to include these fun and games into the lives of children as research has shown that play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. The activity encourages play which is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them.
Junior Departmental Sister of the Paediatric Unit, Sis. Shivani Ramdihol expressed joy for such an activity to be brought to the children underscoring that it nurtures the children’s growth and development.
“I think is very good because even though the children are not well and they have to be hospitalised we would still like for them to be able to achieve all their developmental milestones, as they should within their respective age groups.”
