Office of Climate Change planning aggressive public awareness campaign

DPI Guyana, Thursday, July 26, 2018

The Office of Climate of Change (OCC) is planning a series of events aimed at sensitising the public about climate change and government’s adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Communications Specialist of OCC, Yasmin Bowman, in a recent interview said panel discussions targeting stakeholders in specific sectors will be hosted in each quarter.

“One of the areas we want to focus on climate change and health because whether we know it or believe it or not climate change affects health.”

Climate-resilient construction is an important focus area for the OCC, Bowman said, given the effects changing climate has on infrastructure.

The Communications Specialist informed that that panel discussions will be recorded and aired throughout the country for greater reach.

The OCC is also developing public service announcements (PSAs) which provide simple tips on energy conservation, climate-smart agriculture, flood preparedness and more to be aired on radio.

The development of the PSAs is being done by the OCC in collaboration with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) and other related agencies.

“We have a number of ways we are engaging the public. We may not always be able to have awareness sessions, but we are meeting them as much as possible,” Bowman added.
