Region Six women receive leadership training

Monday, April 1, 2019

Over 30 working and single parent women from various communities in Region Six, East Berbice Corentyne, are now equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to take up leadership roles and become excellent leaders, after a one-day leadership training was hosted by the Ministry of Social Protection’s Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI).

The training was held last weekend in the Regional Democratic Council’s boardroom under the theme ‘Enhancing Capabilities and Increasing Choices.’  The main objective of the training was to inform and teach women that leadership is not a one-step, but it includes improving oneself, enhancing self-esteem, developing communication level, professionalism and possession of good character.

During the opening ceremony, Regional Executive Officer, Region Six, Kim Williams-Stephen welcomed the training and noted the regional administration’s continued support to all capacity building programmes.

Williams-Stephen explained to the participants that professionalism is pivotal for performing duties and becoming good leaders. She stated that this training provides the opportunity for the participants to enhance their potential and develop themselves; for with empowered people, Guyana will move forward.

“We are all different and must develop our own unique strength and skills. We don’t want to be men but want equal rights and opportunity. In the past it was the opinion of people that women’s place is in the home but today that has changed. I implore you to ask questions, be alert and open to learn. I challenge you to make the most of this opportunity.  Stronger communities mean stronger regions and ultimately stronger countries,” Williams-Stephen related.

Chairperson, GWLI, Mavis Benn, focused her presentation on self-esteem and leadership. Benn emphasized that development of oneself is only possible once he or she identifies his or her weaknesses. She urged the participants to practice regular self-introspection.

“This allows you an opportunity to know yourself, understand who you are, believe in yourself and discover the hidden potentials. Self-introspection is not a one day something but must be done overtime. You have to practice basic ethics wherever you are, and build your self-esteem continuously. You must also discipline yourself and your mind. If you are to be a good leader, you must be able to control your mind from the negativity,” Benn explained.

Presentations were also made by Dr. Astell Collins who focused on preparing for successful leadership and Myrna Lee who dealt with effective communication.

At the end of the training the participants received their certificate of participation.

Mayor of New Amsterdam, Winifred Heywood and Member of Parliament, Barbara Pilgrim and Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Social Protection, Adrian Ramrattan were also in attendance.

GWLI was set up in 1999 and was charged with making women, whether employed or unemployed take up leadership roles in society and communities. Similar trainings will be held in the future in other regions.
