Region Three admin hosts second ‘Walk About’

The residents of Hague Backdam on the West Coast of Demerara received an impromptu visit from the Region Three Regional Executive Officer (REO), Denis Jaikaran and Senior Superintendent of Work, Shanganan Singh.
During the engagement with the REO, the residents took the opportunity to discuss issues affecting them.
The pressing issue was the presence of excess fresh water in the canal. Farmers residing at the front of the community said they needed the water due to the state of their rice crop which is in the “bearing stage”. However, farmers living at the back of Hague explained while the water benefitted those at the front, it was hampering the farmers at the back of the community.
Jaikaran suggested the temporary solution of blocking a section of the canal. This will ensure the water is maintained at a certain level for the farmers at the front and every four (4) hours be opened to allow the water to replenished before being closed.
“This is just a temporary control mechanism that we will put in place so that the water will not be allowed to overflow the dam and into the farmers’ land down at the back. Our workforce will monitor it and ensure it is done satisfactory and benefits both parties,” Jaikaran explained.
It was agreed by all that they will meet to discuss a permanent solution to this issue. Additionally, the REO informed the resident of rehabilitation works in the pipeline for their community.
“The road leading to the burial ground will be resurfaced as requested by the residents. The schools have received infrastructural improvements but there is more to come. The bridge that was requested was built and I intend to continue on the path our government to ensure the good life reaches all,” Jaikaran. said.
