Regions One, two under flood watch

The Civil Defence Commission has deployed its Rapid Damage Assessment Teams to support Pomeroon-Supenaam (Region 2) and Essequibo Islands-West Demerara (Region 3) to assist areas that have flooded following after two days of continuous rainfall.

Reports received from the Regional Executive Office of Pomeroon-Supenaam has confirmed that several areas in the region are currently underwater.  It is also being reported that some schools have been closed including Anara Regina Multilateral High School.

At the moment all the sluices are open and the pumps will be turned on when they are closed.

According to a recent report issued by the National Weather Watch Centre at Timehri, between 8am on Wednesday to 8am on Thursday (24hrs) some areas in Regions One and Two have experienced more than an inch of accumulated rainfall.

The following areas recorded more than 25mm (1 inch) of rainfall within the 24 hours under review. In Region two the highest record of rainfall was in Hibernia approximately eight inches, Supenaam more than nine inches. Among the other areas affected is Charity Pomeroon which saw approximately four inches, Wakapoa over two inches and Better Hope Essequibo more than four inches.

Meanwhile in Regions Three and Four there have been records of high rainfall in Good Success, Wakenaam, Leguan, Anna Marie with three inches or more and Georgetown with one and a half inches of rain

The Flood warning remains in effect for flood-prone areas in these regions. According to the weather centre’s morning report for December 12, these conditions are expected to continue with heavy rains in the mornings and light showers in the afternoon.

An above normal high tide is expected at 15:54hrs at approximately 2.99 metres and residents in coastal and low-lying areas are advised to take all necessary precautionary measures.
