DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, November 12, 2019

A second programme has been launched in Mahdia, one week after 28 youths from completed an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Robotics Workshop. The successful hosting of the programme is the fulfilment of a pledge made by the First Lady, Her Excellency, Sandra Granger to ensure more programmes are made available to the young people in the community.

The four-month programme will expose 30 young adults to courses in Information Technology as well as Literacy and Numeracy, Entrepreneurship, Sexual Reproductive Health and Science. The initiative is a collaboration between the Office of the First Lady and the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).

Vice-Chairman of BIT, Donald Ainsworth had noted that hinterland youths “are being given equal opportunity and access to education since they are just as capable of excelling as those on the coastland. Thanks to the vision of His excellency President David Granger, the Board of Industrial Training has made it our priority to invest heavily in Guyana’s youths.”

Echoing similar sentiments, His Worship the Mayor of Mahdia, David Adams emphasised that the people of Region 8, despite their geographical location, will be allowed to transform their lives. “The township is young, and as development continues, there will be more job opportunities for residents across all of the sectors, the wait for development is finally over, the promises made to the people of Mahdia are been fulfilled and that is the kind of progress the town of Mahdia needs,” the mayor remarked.

The first ICT and STEM Robotics workshop was completed on November 2, with the highest past rate of 98.6%; surpassing all other administrative regions, over the past three years of the programme.

On completion, the 30 participants will be presented with a nationally recognised Certificate of Completion issued by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).
