Sheet Anchor water plant to supply 15,000 residents
DPI, GUYANA, Friday, June 1, 2018
A US$6Million treatment plant now being built at Sheet Anchor, Berbice will provide clean water to over 15,000 residents by September 2019.
This is just one of three such plants Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is installing with the other two located at Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara and at Diamond, East Bank Demerara at a cost of US$31Million.
The Region Six plant is being constructed by Sinohydro, a Chinese company, and the first phase of pile driving is 48 percent complete.
On a tour of the region, GWI’s Managing Director (GWI) Dr. Richard Van West-Charles said, “this is going to be very important in terms of extending access and improving the quality of water in this area. Some 25 villages are going to be the beneficiaries….Gangaram (village) previously was supplied by GuySuCo but that will come into this area.”
He noted that the many of the piles being used are being sourced from Kwakwani in Region 10 and the project is also creating local jobs: “We have the sub-contractor in Berbice Mr. Ferdinand is working with them (Sinohydro); you have a number of workers. I was speaking to a young lady; it was the first time she was working on the site and she is having a good experience. So in terms of employment, in terms of sub-contracting, the local economy is going to benefit.”
It was also highlighted that GWI is speeding up the issuance of meters in the region to improve efficiency and reduce losses.
The villages that the treatment plant will service include: Industry or No. 25, Dun Robin or No. 23, Warren or No. 21, Kendalls or No. 19, Bohemia or No. 17, Susannah or No. 15, Hermitage or No. 13, Treurniet or No. 11, Lewis Manor or No. 9, No. 7, Prospect, Palmyra or No. 4, Cumberland, No. 3, Sheet Anchor, Ordnance Fort Canje, Canefield, Rose Hall, Reliance, Adelphi, Good Banana Land, Little Bleyendaal, No. 10 and Goldstone Hall or No. 11 (Gangaram).
