Sixth Meeting of CARICOM Foreign Ministers and Cuba underway in Georgetown

Cuba’s significant role in the development of the Caribbean region, was lauded by Dr. Karen Cummings, Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the opening ceremony of the Sixth Meeting of CARICOM and Cuban Foreign Ministers.

The meeting, being hosted by the Government of Guyana, got underway at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) at approximately 09:00hrs today.

“I must take this opportunity to recognise Cuba’s significant role in the development of the region, particularly, in human resources, which is essential for advancement and economic development” the minister noted.

She said shining examples of Cuba’s contributions were, “the scholarships offered in the scientific and medical fields.”

Further, Minister Cummings highlighted the recent establishment of a Cuba financed Regional Centre for Stimulating the Development of Children, Adolescents and Young People with Special Educational Needs Associated with Disabilities.

“These seek to ensure all-inclusive societies.”

She said for almost fifty years, Member States, the Caribbean Community and Cuba have shared a close bond which has been strengthened year after year and led to collaboration and cooperation at various levels. She urged the ministers gathered at the meeting to never forget this.

“So, as we gather here today, we are reminded of and signal the unreserved and direct alliance that connects CARICOM and Cuba… Cooperation has been achieved through our frequent interactions and collaboration in the regional and international community.”

During today’s meeting ministers are expected to further discuss CARICOM-Cuba relations, climate change, tourism, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
