Social Cohesion Day set to bring all cultures alive

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, May 8, 2019

The Ministry of the Presidency’s Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport’s fourth Social Cohesion Day under the theme, ‘Appreciating our diversities; building a better Guyana’, is expected to portray the nation’s multi-ethnicity and multicultural dimensions.

“Social Cohesion Day creates a sense of belonging, who we are and our identity as a multiethnic, multicultural people. So, this is one day set aside for us to reflect upon that and celebrate who we are as Guyanese people,” Acting Programme Coordinator, Natasha Singh-Lewis told the Department of Public Information (DPI), adding that citizens should expect this and much more.

The event will be hosted on May 13 at 10:00hrs at the National Culture Centre (NCC).

The Acting Programme Coordinator said that this year’s event not only reflects on the department’s work so far but the testimony of what Guyana can be when harmony, love and unity speak in the hearts of citizens. She noted that while the department was only birthed after the Coalition Government entered office in 2015, it has done many positive things and will continue to do so.

As for the cultural aspects of the events, Singh-Lewis predicts that it will be much different than last year.

“We have gone a little bit different this year to allow the nursery school children to be a part of the welcoming committee where they also will be performing before the official commencement of the event.”

This includes the presence of the West Demerara Secondary School steel-pan band and for the first time, the participation of the Cyril Potter College of Education.

The department has invited Members of Parliament, the diplomatic committee, secondary schools, disciplinary forces and Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, 5 and 10 to participate.

According to the Acting Programme Coordinator, the department is also in the planning process to implement the activities in the remaining regions later this year.
