Statement on video recording of confrontation between a teacher and student of Christ Church Secondary School

(Friday, March 29, 2019) – The Ministry of Education has taken note of a video circulating on social media showing a confrontation between a student of the Christ Church Secondary School and a teacher.

An investigation revealed that the incident occurred on October 19, 2017, between a teacher of the school and a Grade nine student. Further, it is understood that the confrontation was a result of the student using a mobile phone during instruction time, which is prohibited.

The matter was reported to the administration of the school following which the child’s parent requested that the child should be transferred to another school. That request was granted.

The Ministry of Education has a clear position concerning the use of mobile phones by students during instruction periods. The attached circular dated April 14, 2007, speaks to that position.

The Ministry of Education condemns any act of violence particularly in the school environment.

Moreover, an update on the recent incident at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute will be made available as soon as the investigation is finished.
