Stricter plans implemented at City markets in accordance with National Emergency Measures

– Face mask mandatory to enter markets

– Bourda and Stabroek markets to be reopened April 7

The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown has reaffirmed its promise of working closely with the Government to put an end to the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (VOVID-19) pandemic.

The Council noted that it will abide by the curfew and measures recently outlined in the COVID-19 National Emergency Measures published by the Ministry of Public Health.

On Monday, Mayor of Georgetown Pandit Ubraj Narine, via a Facebook live briefing on the municipality’s social media page, advised all residents to heed the following measures.

1. 1. Food services and restaurants must only provide delivery, drive-thru and take away services;
   2. All municipal markets and street vending will operate between the hours from 7 am to 2 pm. Vendors and stallholders and caravan operators are to observe the following measures:

• • As per the Mayor and City Council and national laws and bylaws, produce must be stored 6 inches above the ground.
  • All meats being sold must be packaged and not left in the open
  • Regularly sanitise commonly touched surfaces with bleach and water solutions.
  • Wearing of face masks is mandatory to maintain your safety and that of patrons.
  • Cough and sneeze into the crook of your elbow if you do not have a tissue
  • Stay home if you are ill and contact the COVID-19 hotlines
  • Avoid close contact with people who have flu-like symptoms
  • Ensure that social and physical distancing is practised at your stall/caravan.
  • Maintain at least 2 metres (approximately 6 feet) distance between yourself and others, especially anyone who is coughing or showing signs of flu-like illness.
  • For caravan operators, please ensure that a system is in place for persons to be sanitised whereby a sink equipped with potable water and soap before they access your goods.

The City Mayor said anyone entering the markets must wear a facemask.

Presently, all markets which fall within the ambit of the City are closed to undergo sanitisation.

“We are sanitising Bourda and Stabroek markets internally with the aim of re-opening those two markets on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. Our other markets will be reopened by the end of the week once all relevant systems are in place,” Mayor Narine stated.

A national curfew was imposed from the 3 April to 3 May 2020 between the hours of 6:00pm and 6:00am.
