Students anticipation high, as schools reopen in Georgetown
DPI, Guyana, Monday, September 3, 2018
The new school year began today with schools across Region Four reopening for the September term, but it was not all smooth sailing following strike action by the Guyana Teachers Union and some inclement weather.
Hundreds of neatly dressed children attending nursery, primary and secondary school for the first time excitedly turned out to their schools today as they begin their new journey. At North Georgetown Secondary, new students Trevon Ramdass and Aruni Sealey eagerly anticipated the start of the new school year.
Ramdass told the Department of Public Information (DPI), “I’m expecting to make new friends, have a new attitude towards my school work, meet new teachers, study new subjects. I know I will also be doing several projects.”
Aruni Sealey, who is also a new student of North Georgetown Secondary School, was nervous at first but overcame her trepidation. She told DPI that “When I saw some of my friends from my old school, I felt at home. English and Mathematics are my favourite subjects but I like Mathematics better.”
Many parents went the extra mile to ensure that their children’s books, uniforms, backpacks were in order. Some parents were teary-eyed and some happily entered their classrooms.
Claudine Squires said, “I felt sad like when they’re leaving for their first day at daycare or nursery school but I’m proud because I know that he tried his best, I’m very proud of the school he got.”
Marwin Layne is one happy parent who took the day to see daughter off to her final year in nursery school. Layne said “I feel very happy about her to return to school today that’s why I came with her. She’s also very happy to be back at school today.”
This first term, which started on September 3, is expected to last for 15 weeks, ending in mid-December, so that children may enjoy a wonderful Christmas season.
