― MOU to be the latest initiative for hinterland

DPI, Guyana, Monday, November 25, 2019

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), between the Hinterland Electrification Company Incorporated (HECI) and the Power Producing and Distribution Incorporated (PPDI), will be the latest in a string of efforts aimed at driving development in the hinterland region.

This was revealed by the Hon. David Patterson, Minister of Public Infrastructure during his address to the public gathering at the commissioning of the Barrack Retreat Corridor in Lethem, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo, on November 23.

“The idea is, they will sign an MOU, and they will take over the maintenance of the plants in Lethem and all other hinterland locations to ensure that they are reliable and constant,” Minister Patterson said.

With this in place, the maintenance of all the power generation plants within the hinterland region will be undertaken by PPDI. Currently, PPDI is responsible for the maintenance of the Wartsila generation plant in Kingston Georgetown.

These and other major infrastructural development plans and initiatives will continue to bolster the development of the border town. In addition to the MOU and the major road upgrades, there are also plans for an International Airport to be built within the vicinity of Lethem.
