Visual Art and Craft market commences with a bang
DPI, GUYANA, Wednesday, May 23, 2018
As part of activities slated for Guyana’s Independence Carnival, local artists got the chance to showcase their products this morning at the Visual Art and Craft Market on Main Street.
Violet Whitehead, owner of Flower Makers told DPI that she hopes members of the public will visit the area and support them.
She said, “It is supposed to be Independence so we are hoping that visitors will come and they will see the kind of things Guyanese do, and experience Guyanese craft. What we are really hoping for is sales.” Whitehead added that her products are all made from natural materials.
Lendon Jemmott of Jemmott’s Association, said that he used to sell his art and craft opposite the Ministry of Social Cohesion.
He added that he currently manages his farm while trying to create an impressive line of art. He hopes to make an impact at the Visual Art and Craft Market.
He explained, “This market fast forwards things that I had planned, because I was working towards accomplishing about 100 exotic pieces that I can display on the internet. I had tried to launch myself back on the scene since the 50th Independence but I could not.
“I felt confident coming out, because this craft market specifically caters for artists showcasing their work for overseas visitors”, Jemmott further explained.
Owner of David’s Creative Designs, Natasha David said that she hopes persons will be able to see the hard work that participants put in to their creations.
“I am expecting the public to come and support our local stuff; we need your support with this initiative. We all came here today to showcase what we have to offer that will highlight our artistic side”, David added.
Minister of Social Cohesion, with responsibilities of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. George Norton said that he is always impressed with such exhibitions and welcomed the chance to meet the artists.
“This is an opportunity for the participants to get an increase in their rate of sale…if you look at them (the creations) they do take a lot of time to make”, Minister Norton said.
He also urged the public to come and view what is being offered.
The two-day visual Art and Craft Market is being hosted by the Ministry of Social Cohesion and aims to give the local artists much needed exposure.
