Appreciate the need for patience- Minister Ramjattan urges

DPI, Guyana, Friday, May 8, 2020

Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan today said ensuring the credibility and transparency of the March 2, 2020, General and Regional elections, will only be achieved through patience for the recount process.

The Minister had visited the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) earlier today, where the national recount of the March polls is underway.

“This is an unprecedented scenario. The last such recount with the Cross Commission took months, maybe a year. We are going to learn of the time it takes to check a box, by midway into the second week. And more and more you are going to see people getting more efficient.”

On Thursday Guyana Election Commission’s (GECOM) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Yolanda Ward had responded to claims by some officials of political parties that the continuous queries being made by agents were delaying the recounting process.

According to Minister Ramjattan, the process must come to finality to see credibility.

“So, the time, if they are regarded as slow now, will be improved upon. But whatever length of time it takes, I want everybody including political parties, to appreciate the need for patience because I believe; this is what will bring it to finality. And if we have to wait a couple of days, why not?”

The Minister opined that the elections commission will decide on all the issues unearthed during the process, noting that he remains confident that the coalition government will prevail after the recount.
