Mrs. Granger, who was inducted as Patron to the Organisation on in February this year, stated that each young woman should choose a career, which they will enjoy.  “The first thing I urge you to do is to choose a career, which you will enjoy, do not choose a career because it is what your family and your friends want you to do.   Secondly, remain open to new ideas.  In today’s world, information and communication technologies are constantly developing and changing, we need to adapt to remain relevant,” she said.

Some of the graduates, who are aged 11 – 22, explained how helpful the programme had been for them. Teenager, Ms. Amanda Karran said that the programme has helped her to be more open and she believes that she is now more able to take on a leadership role among her peers.  Meanwhile, another young woman, Ms. Leanna Joaquin said the programme has helped to build her self-confidence and it has opened her mind to more career opportunities and she looks forward to being a lawyer one day.

Ms. Taneka Caldeira–Calder, a District Commissioner in West Demerara for the Organisation, in an invited comment, said that the Girl Guides Association has several on-going projects, which are geared towards empowering young women and helping them to achieve their highest potential.  “Our aim is to help the girls to maximise their potential,” she said.

Mrs. Granger further urged the graduates to strive to be happy. “If you’re not really happy you cannot achieve your full potential. Above all, be brave and be fearless. It’s your life and you owe it to yourself to choose a career that will take you to a happy adulthood,” she said.

The Guyana Girl Guides Association has over the years provided a number of platforms for young women, to become leaders of tomorrow.
