Berbice Mash kicks off

The inclement weather currently being experienced in East Berbice-Corentyne was in no way a hindrance to the region’s highly anticipated annual Mashramani Costume and Float Parade, which got off with a bang earlier today.

The revellers, all pumped up for the road tramp, attired in their costumes, assembled at Tacoma Turn in the vicinity of Islington, before the action began. The traditional route will see the massive crowd of revellers parading through Stanleytown and continuing east down the main street of New Amsterdam before the fun culminates at State House.

Scores of spectators lined the thoroughfare to catch a glimpse of the colourful exhibition.

This year, the Mashramani celebration in the ancient county will see over 25 private businesses along with several government ministries, the Guyana Police Service (GPS) and learning institutes, participating in the joyful occasion, which commemorates Guyana’s 49th Republic Anniversary.

Regional Executive Officer (REO), Kim Williams-Stephen, who was at the time leading the Regional Democratic Council’s float, told the Department of Public Information (DPI), that the Region 6 float depicts Guyana’s wealth. The REO also highlighted the section which portrayed the oil and gas industry which will soon take the country onto a road of transformation.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge travelled to Berbice to join in the celebration. The minister said he joined the revelry because being Guyanese is all about unity and this is clearly reflected in our Mashramani celebrations.

Also, in attendance were Regional Health Director, Jevaughn Stephens, Mayor of New Amsterdam, Winifred Heywood and other prominent members of the New Amsterdam Township.

As Berbicians continue to celebrate Mash 2019 under the theme ‘Celebrate Mash 49 with victory in mind’, the Department of Public Information’s (DPI) team in Berbice will provide viewers with Mashramani up-dates.
