Caneview Ave. gets Christmas spruce up

Stricter fines for dumping being considered

DPI, Guyana, Monday, December 16, 2019

The Mayor and City Council and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure have conducted a clean-up of Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown.

Councillor Denroy Tudor indicated that the dumping of garbage along the street was an issue that had been affecting residents in the area for some time.

Tudor said Council had cleared the area several times since he took office in 2018 but that has not stopped the dumping.

“It’s certainly saddening to see what has transpired and I’m encouraging residents of not only this constituency but the entire municipality to desist from dumping. We certainly want to see this country, this capital city returned to being a garden city, and we need each and everyone to be a part of that process,” Councillor Tudor stated.

And with the traditional Christmas cleaning underway in many households, the councillor urged residents to use better methods of garbage disposal.

“I know it’s the Christmas time and persons may have excesses that they wish to get rid of, but please be mindful of how you try to get rid of these excesses,” Tudor said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore said the current situation was unbecoming and meant additional funds had to be found to remedy the situation. He also expressed the Council’s gratitude to the public infrastructure ministry for its assistance.

According to the deputy mayor, they were looking at erecting warning signs and at additional policies and stricter fines for dumpers.

The M&CC is currently evaluating the littering by-laws to have them strengthened.

Resident and Constituency Manager of Constituency 14, Brenda Williams said that the dumping in the area had rendered a section of the road inaccessible as persons continue to discard items such as fridges, stoves and even dead pets and other animals.

“It’s just not right. I think the Council should institute some charges against these persons who feel as that they can do as they like,” she declared.

Residents were encouraged to be more vigilant and report persons seen dumping in the area.
