CBC 2018 champions rewarded for historic performance
– 18-year-old captain, Stanton Rose named MVP

The National Men’s Basketball Team was last evening rewarded for their historic Gold medal performance at the 2018 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Caribbean Championship.
Members of Team Guyana who played undefeated in the tournament received $100,000 each at a simple ceremony held at the recently refurbished Burnham Basketball Court, as a token of appreciation by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF).
The team comprised of Stanton Rose- captain, Shaine Webster, Harold Adams, Orland Glasgow, Travis Burnette, Travis Belgrave, Kevon Wiggins, Ray Victor, Anthony Moe, Denzel Devonish, Timothy Thompson, Head Coach Junior Hercules and assistant coach Dennis Clarke.
Eighteen-year-old Rose who was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) will go down as the youngest to captain Guyana and the first to give the country a title which remained elusive for 37 years. Rose thanked his team and coaches for trusting him with such the mammoth task of leading the national team.
“It was a great opportunity for me to display my skills and to lead the Guyana National team to their first CBC Championship. I want to thank the players, coaches and management for trusting me and it was a pleasure leading you guys and the country to our first national championship and I hope that I can do this once more” he stated.
Head coach Hercules aid that from the get-go the players believed that they could have won the title and played like true champions throughout the tournament. Hercules is hoping that the victory can motivate other young sportsmen and women to do the same for Guyana.
“If there is a youngster somewhere in Guyana who is looking on and who wants to be inspired, my hope is that this victory that we were able to achieve for Guyana in 2018, can be the inspiration for future generations”
President of GABF Nigel Hinds said the team played against all odds and came out victorious making the country proud. “…our guys showed the fight that was needed to make this happen” he stated.
Hinds also thanked the government and other sponsors who ensured the team was able to participate in the tournament. He made special mention of Minister of State Joseph Harmon and Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson who donated $1Million each towards the team.
After the reward ceremony, the GABF President officially commissioned the newly refurbished $11Million Burnham Basketball court.
