Climate Change high on agenda for Youth Parliament

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, August 14, 2018

The fight against Climate Change is among the top issues to be addressed through motions and debates as the fourth annual Youth Parliament gets underway.

Beginning tomorrow, the government side of the house will seek to push motions that will address the negative effects of Climate Change in Guyana.

Youth Minister of Natural Resources, Secondary School student, Devi Singh said her motion will focus on maintaining the forest to reduce the effects.

“We all know that the temperature is rising dramatically and is causing the ice caps to melt. We all know that 90 percent of the population is on the coast.” Singh said the planting of mangroves is one way of aiding in the process of combatting Climate Change.

University of Guyana’s (UG) Trevon Chichester, who is representing the Minister of State, said he will be speaking on the importance of continuing the efforts of the Green State Development Strategy (GSDS) as a means of combatting Climate Change within the country.

“It allows us to examine the seven pillars of the green state development strategy and to really examine its impact on its various sectors and the economic impact it will have on them and human development.”

Amisha Ramdin from the St Ignatius Secondary School will be representing the Minister of State during the debates for the secondary schools. She too will be looking at the Green State Development Strategy and its benefits to Guyana and how Climate Change affects Guyana.

“As Guyanese, we need to address the problem for the benefit of the nation,” she said. A resident of Region Nine, Ramdin much of the seasonal changes in her region are as a result of Climate Change, therefore addressing it is crucial for the residents there.
