The Community Infrastructure Improvement Programme (CIIP) under the Ministry of Communities has this year identified new Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) and townships for extensive developmental works.

The four new towns named by President David Granger and newly formed NDC’s are still in their infancy stage. As such, Coordinator of the Engineering Services of the Ministry of Communities, Naeem Khan said CIIP will be investing heavily in their infrastructural development.

Coordinator of Engineering Services Ministry of Communities, Naeem Khan.

He told the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Friday, that there is a need for improvement in these communities.

“Of course, these are new towns and these new NDC’s they need somewhere to function, to carry on their day to day work. So, our focus is to build facilities for them or rehabilitate existing facilities.”

Among the major projects for the townships are the construction of the Lethem and Mahdia Town Halls, construction of the Moruka/Phoenix NDC in the Pomeroon Region, rehabilitation of the NDC building in Wyburg/Caracas, New Amsterdam, and the construction of a new facility for the Plegt Anker/Kortberaat NDC. There will also be a remodelling of the Hauraruni/Yarrowkabra NDC.

According to Khan, CIIP continues to assist Local Democratic Organs, especially the municipalities. It also lends its engineering expertise and construction audit to Regional Democratic Councils.

The construction of the Lethem Town Hall is a “rollover” project from 2018 which stands at the cost of $45M. The Mahdia Town Hall will cost CIIP some $58M. Work on the Moruka/Phoenix NDC will be $12M, while the costs for the Wyburg/Caracas, PlegtAnker/Kortberaat and the remodelling of the Hauraruni/Yarrowkabra will cost $10M, $20M and $9M respectively.

CIIP will also construct NDC buildings for the Kitty/Providence and Nile/Cozier communities at the cost of $12M each. The Lamaha/Yarrowkabra NDC building will be also remodelled at $9M.
