“An educated nation is a progressive nation,” was the advice finance minister, the Hon. Winston Jordan gave to youths participating in a programme facilitated by the Beterverwagting-based Educational, Cultural, and Welfare Organisation.
Addressing the youths on Monday, the minister noted that under the Coalition Government, the education sector’s budget is one-sixth of the national budget which demonstrates its commitment to ensuring youths are empowered. The innovative 5 B’s programme was cited as another example by the minister.
“As a result of that programme, there have been significant improvements in attendance rates and results. Have you noticed the results coming out of rural and hinterland schools? Unbelievable and unheard of. Why? Because if you plant a seed and water it, you can expect it to grow.”
Minister Jordan urged the participants of the programme to be dedicated, disciplined, to understand their strengths, and work to be well-rounded as they furthered their education.
Beyoncé Blackman and Akayla Matheson received electronic tablets for their outstanding performances.
Providing a review, Karim Trotman said the free programme, launched in 2015, attracted three students initially as a Grade Six Preparation initiative. It has since expanded to cater for youths in Grades 2 to 11, offering remedial lessons, sports training, and educational tours countrywide.
