EU Ambassador pays courtesy call to Minister Benn

— Commends Minister for key role in recent elections

Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Robeson Benn, on Friday evening, received a courtesy call from Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the European Union to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, H.E. Fernando Ponz Cantó.

During the engagement held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the two officials discussed the government’s focused on areas on cooperation.

Minister Benn also thanked Ambassador Cantó for the support given throughout the recent General and Regional Elections.

“Certainly, the first issue in terms of our meeting was to thank the Ambassador for the help we received from the European Union in respect of Guyana staying on the democratic path with respect to the process which we went through for our recent national elections” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ambassador Cantó congratulated Minister Benn on his appointment to noting the important role he played in the recent elections.

“I feel extremely encouraged by the good ideas and reforms that the Minister and government are undertaking now. But first of all, the objective was for me to congratulate Minister Benn who has played a key role first as Commissioner in GECOM in the previous period but who is now playing a key role for the future of Guyana.”

The Ambassador reiterated that the EU will continue to stand by Guyana “particularly in the area of his (Minister Benn) responsibility and to increase our cooperation.”

In 1975, Guyana and the EU established diplomatic relations which are premised on the common principles of equality, mutual respect, the rule-of-law, and tolerance.
