Expanding possibilities

─ St. Dominic residents educated on the importance of ICT

DPI, Guyana, Saturday, October 19, 2019

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Hon. Catherine Hughes took her message of digital marketing to the residents of St Dominic in the Barima-Waini sub-district, Mabaruma.

On Saturday, Minister Hughes visited the Region 1 community where she informed residents about the advances the government has been making in the telecommunications sector.

She reminded the residents that her ministry did not exist before the Coalition Government assumed office. She added that it was the vision of His Excellency, President David Granger to establish a ministry with the responsibility of transitioning Guyana into the digital age – as such the Public Telecommunications Ministry was birthed.

As she engaged the residents of the community, the Telecommunications Minister highlighted that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) hubs have been established in numerous communities across the country. She disclosed that plans are on stream to establish a hub in the community. While the hubs are primarily utilised by schoolchildren to complete school assignments, residents can utilise the service to access public services, improve their skills and market their products online.

“Maybe you are a lady, and you like to do a little catering… imagine with the internet, you can come in here sit at those computers that we will put here and [you can] go to google and it will show you a recipe to make a wedding cake,” she explained.

She also used the opportunity to inform the residents about the ministry’s Farmer’s Market app. It was explained that the app will allow farmers a chance to market their produce to the online community.

“This app you will be able to download for free and put it on your phone… it allows you, if you’re planting any produce, to be able to go and say on this website what you got to sell.”

While commenting on the progress Guyana has made in transforming into the digital age, she also noted that the government has made significant efforts in making government services easier to access via the internet. She pointed out that residents are now able to apply for a passport and transact other business in the comfort of their own homes.

The Public Telecommunications Minister also distributed electronic tablets to several residents in the community.
