― women and girls targeted
DPI, Guyana, Thursday, March 7, 2019
In observance of International Women’s Day (Friday, March 8) the Skeldon District Hospital, Region Six, East Berbice Corentyne, held a “Women’s Health Day Outreach” on Wednesday.
Some of the services offered at the outreach included VIA screening, Audiology, Ultrasound, Blood pressure and blood sugar testing, HIV counselling and Testing, Dental Services, Ear Examination and Pap smears for females 49 years and older only.
According to the Administrator of the Skeldon District Hospital Shurla Scott, the activity was focused primarily on women and girls in the community. Scott noted that often women do not speak out about the illnesses they may be experiencing. ”The Skeldon Hospital is trying to break that stigma, so the administration thought it best to treat our women to a special medical outreach for females” she said
More than 60 women benefited from the medical outreach. Many told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that they were more comfortable discussing their health issues with doctors and nurses of similar gender.
Aside from the health outreach, the hospital is hosting a week of activities in observance of International Women’s Day. It includes a staff breakfast, a women empowerment campaign along with a photo shoot and a day of honouring women in and around the Skeldon community for their hard work throughout the years.
The administration of Skeldon Hospital is inviting the general public to their International Women’s Day seminar on Friday 8 at the hospital’s multipurpose shed.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s day campaign is #BalanceForBetter – a call to action for driving gender balance across the world.
