Free Movement committee to be revitalised

― group to be expanded to include more agencies

DPI, Guyana, Friday, February 15, 2019

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, in a press conference today, stated the government will be resuscitating and expanding the Free Movement Committee.

The committee was formed in January of 2006 to allow for the free movement of Guyanese with specified skills. The original committee comprised of the then Ministries of Labour and Human service, Education, Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Culture Youth and Sport, the University of Guyana and the Media Profession.

The committee, however, became dormant after a few meetings. With the recent increase in the number of specified skills allowed free movement in CARICOM, approval was granted for the resuscitation and expansion of the committee, with the original ministries with the addition of the following agencies:

  • Ministry of Agriculture
  • Ministry of The Presidency; Department of Citizenship and Immigration
  • National Accreditation Council
  • The Government Technical Institute
  • The Council for Technical Vocational and Education Training
  • The Guyana Nursing Council
  • And the Guyana Office for Investment
