DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, May 8, 2019

Recognising that young people in his division need guidance and support, divisional commander of ‘G’ Division – Guyana Police Force, Khali Pareshram along with ranks under his watch, spearheaded the formation of twelve youth groups within the division which include the islands within the Essequibo River. The most recent group formed was the Sans Souci Police Station Youth Group on the island of Wakenaam.

In his quest to ensure the youth groups are functioning effectively, Commander Pareshram has secured donations in the form of sport gear and sewing machines for all the groups. The donations, made at the ‘D’ Division, Headquarters, Anna Regina Essequibo Coast on Saturday last, came from Food for the Poor Guyana Incorporated and Essential Supplies Incorporated.

According to Senior Superintendent Pareshram, the equipment will be used for training and leisure activities. “We at the level of the Guyana Police Force recognised the importance of our young people, and we understand clearly that they need full guidance. ‘G’ Division formed 12 groups, and all are well equipped with sport gear and sewing machines which will ensure that the youth are involved in meaningful recreational activities and skills training exercises.”

The commander explained that the group leaders are volunteers who also possess the necessary skills to help train young people to become excellent sportsmen and women. The volunteers also have trade skills to assist persons interested in learning to sew. However, for young people to benefit from the training and usage of the items they must become members of a group and subscribe to the rules and regulations governing the organisation.

Youth groups formed thus far within the division are Charity Youth Group, Dartmouth Youth Group, Lima Sands Youth Group, Capoey Youth Group, Queenstown Youth Group, Zorg Youth group, Sand Pit Youth Group, Good Hope Youth Group, Sans Souci Police Station Youth Group, Leguan Youth Group, Affiance Youth Group and Anna Regina/Henrietta Youth Group.

Currently, ‘D’ Division is preparing a team of young people for a robotic competition in Georgetown. A volunteer from STEM Guyana is assisting the team.
