Minister within Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings urged the graduating students of Hope Secondary School to equip themselves with a skill that will allow them to benefit from the country’s upcoming oil and gas industry.
“You are growing up in a time when Guyana is on the brink of unprecedented economic development. Very soon with the discovery of our vast deposits, Guyana will become an inevitable force which will bring numerous opportunities, especially for young people. Therefore, one must prepare oneself to benefit from such,” Minister Cummings said.
Delivering the feature address at the Secondary School’s graduation ceremony the junior Health Minister advised:
“It is imperative that you continue to educate yourselves, learn a skill or trade, make yourselves more highly serviceable to your country because Guyana needs each and every one of you.”
Minister Cummings told the students that they must become standard bearers and think about their future in a holistic manner. She noted that the school-leaving event marks the beginning of their journey, hence they needed to move forward responsibly and create a superstructure of integrity, respect and honesty.
“You must have a plan for the future, you must know where you want to be in the future and to actualities that plan, you must learn to set goals and work hard to achieve them.”
Headteacher Donnette Franco congratulated the graduating students for their success at the examinations. In her report, Franco noted that this year several teachers were involved in a number of capacity building workshops aimed to strengthen their competency and improve their training techniques. The Headteacher said workshops such as these will continue to be offered to her staff.
Franco also reported that the students will soon benefit from the construction of a basketball court compliments of Banks DIH Limited, also the school’s paved pathway will be rehabilitated, and improvements made to security and lighting.
