Guyana needs ‘bright minds’ – Min. Sarabo-Halley

─ “Guyana is going to go places and we need bright minds like you sitting here to come and continue to develop our country”

─ “You have to remain focused, understand that you have a purpose and find what exactly your purpose”

DPI, Guyana, Friday, May 3, 2019

Newly appointed Minister of Public Service, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley today visited her Alma Mater, Mae’s Secondary to join with students and the administration at their annual prayer breakfast for students preparing to sit the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate 2019 examinations. In brief remarks, she told those present that Guyana needs ‘bright minds’.

“I would like to urge you that even if you go outside to study to come back home. Don’t think that overseas and those countries outside of Guyana have everything that you desire because Guyana is going to go places and we need bright minds like you sitting here to come and continue to develop our country.”

The Minister of Public Service, who has a keen interest in youth and their development, encouraged the students to seek higher education, whether locally or internationally. She, however, encouraged them not to lose sight of the needs of the homeland.

“I would like to urge you even  if you know that you are going to write your SAT’s and you are trying to figure out if you are going to University of Guyana or you are going to go elsewhere that you should think about coming back to continue to develop our country because our country needs its young people.”

The minister who reminisced her time at the private education institution also urged students to work steadfastly toward their intended goals and not be sidetracked by what may appear complicated at times.

“You have to remain focused understand that you have a purpose and find what exactly your purpose. It doesn’t happen overnight it is not going to happen overnight but once you remain focused you are going to end up where you should end up.”

Minister Sarabo-Halley took the oath of office in the credentials room of the Ministry of the Presidency on Thursday. This follows an announcement naming her as the Parliamentary and ministerial replacement for Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, who represented the Working People’s Alliance, the party she chairs. The resignation of Dr. Roopnaraine, along with other dual citizenship government Members of Parliament (now former), is in keeping with the court of appeal’s ruling on the ineligibility of dual citizens to sit in the National Assembly of Guyana.
