DPI, Guyana, Monday, June 10, 2019
Health Expo 2019 ended on a high note with hundreds of visitors satisfied, some having learnt new things, while others received on the spot treatment, referrals and recommendations where necessary.
Several persons gave the Public Health Ministry a ‘thumbs up’ for hosting yet another successful event. Dental students, Oneil Bess and Jovanna Smith were among the lot and both said they gained knowledge on topics new to them.
An excited Bess explained, “it has been an ecstatic experience for me, for the past four days, it’s been a what I call, ‘funication’ it’s fun and educative, you know, you’re not bored at any one of the booths. There is so much to learn. Yesterday I stopped at the diabetes booth, and I learned so much about foot care. There is so much you learn about dental care, food, preventative measures from getting diseases. I even learned my blood type!”
“Health expo so far has been great, the turnout has been great, the booths are wonderful and it is good to see that everybody is participating,” explained Jovanna Smith.
Director of the Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD), Marlon Cole said the purpose of the department’s booth was to sensitise the general public on best practices when dealing with food.
He explained, “what we are attempting to do at the expo here, is to take the opportunity to reach out to persons who may intend to manufacture food locally, or to be importing food, cosmetics or medical devices and we have our forms that we are distributing to them.”
Cole also said there were videos at the booth demonstrating what are the best practices for food safety. These included, the five key steps to food safety the ‘do’s and don’ts.’ Persons visiting the booth were also able to participate in answering questions about food safety and win prizes.
