The Mahdia Magistrates Court will boost the timely delivery of justice in Mahdia, and the surrounding communities of Potaro/Siparuni, Region 8 Mahdia’s Mayor, David Adams said.
Previously, cases were tried at the Mahdia Police Station, and eventually the need for a larger facility was recognised. The mayor explained, “It was done on a quarterly basis. The magistrates would come in every three months. The intention, here, is for us to have regular sessions where you would have magistrates living in.”
The mayor noted, “there is a huge backlog of cases coming out of this area. It is really unfair to the persons who have cases pending. They are waiting so long to have their cases tried so we want to have justice dispensed in a more timely manner.”
The mining town’s Chief Citizen revealed that construction of the multi-million-dollar facility began six months ago and is expected to be completed by the middle of 2020.
Mayor Adams described the new court as, “a welcome facility to the township… such facilities will enhance the administration of the township and make it run smoothly.”
The Mahdia Magistrates Court is being constructed at the cost of $140M.
