Speech competitions provide young people with a platform to express their views, share their thoughts and experiences on many topics in a constructive manner. This forum allows youths to build both their confidence and communication skills.
With this in mind, the Department of Social Cohesion held a prepared-speech competition which saw the participation of seven youth groups from across Region 3, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara. The competition was held on June 29, at the Grove Multi-Purpose Centre on the East Bank of Essequibo.
The topic “Youth, Drug Use and Abuse” was up for discussion. Each team was given a maximum of five minutes to present on the topic. The criteria for judging included Presentation Style, Relevance to Topic, Pronunciation, Correct Use of Grammar, Content and Information and Contact with Audience.
The competition was stiff as all seven groups gained above 250 points from the allotted 300.
According to Youth Officer Daniela Darbarie
, the contest aimed to showcase the talent within the youth groups and also served as a meeting ground for the groups so that they can interact with each other and share ideas.
“This competition was organised for the purpose of engaging the young people and basically to showcase the hidden talents in Region 3, but beyond that, it also served as a meeting ground for all the groups in the region so that they can interact with each other and share ideas for improvements. It is also meant for motivational purposes and hopefully encourages other youths to come on board and be involved in meaningful engagements,” Darbarie noted.
The youth groups that participated in the competition are Visionary Adolescent Youth Group, Best United Youth Group, Golden Jubilee Youth Group, The Rising Nation Youth Group, Belle West Youth Group, Circle of Hope Youth Group and Sisters/Goed Intent Youth Group. Certificates of participation and medals were given to every group.
The winner and Best Speaker of the competition were awarded to Narisa Wills from the Rising Nation Youth Group while second place went to Alleiyah Charles from Visionary Adolescent Youth Group. Coming in at third was Edward Cox from Sisters/Goed Intent Youth group. Region 3’s education officers judged the competition.
