At today’s graduation ceremony, General Manager of T&HD, Marcelene Merchant explained that the organisation has placed emphasis on training that will enhance the capacity of mariners/seafarers attached to the department, in order to ensure an improved delivery of service.

“T&HD has 156 mariners, 78 are slated to complete the Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarer programme before year-end. Thus far, 47 persons have been trained and the remaining 31 persons may train within the next two months,” Merchant said.  This, she said, will see the remaining individuals being trained in 2019.

The Administrator of MatPal Marine Institute (MPMI), Colleen Abrams noted that the experience gained through the programme will assist as the country moves forward with the development of an oil and gas industry.

Abrams added, “this training is an indication of the organisation’s mandate to deliver quality maritime training to all seafarers, aimed at increasing their skills to satisfy the needs of the shipping industry.”
