Minister of Business, with responsibility for Tourism, Haimraj Rajkumar is urging Guyanese not to believe everything they read on Facebook, while pointing out the need to positively market the country.
The minister was speaking at a Welcome Reception held in his honour at the Cara Lodge by the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG).
“One of my visions is to ensure that Guyana is a place that is safe, that visitors can come to our country and feel free to be a part of our society without being harmed… People want to come…. but the concern is about their safety, and I told them, do not believe the things you saw on Facebook, because a lot of people will take a very small issue and make it into a big scary story,” he told the audience.
The minister called on Guyanese to be cognisant of what they share on social media, in an effort to protect the image of the country. He reiterated the need for positive marketing to boost the tourism industry.
Despite challenges, Minister Rajkumar remains positive about the Tourism sector.“The responsibility of the growth and development of Guyana’s Tourism is something that I relish and I attach great importance to… I am not satisfied at the stage where it is, I’m certain that with significant input, significant cooperation and significant coming together of all the stakeholders, in this sector we can indeed lift the standard of our product that we offer the world at large,” he expressed.
Director of Manufacturing and Marketing within the Ministry of Business, Dominic Gaskin and Minister of Public Telecommunications Catherine Hughes were also in attendance.
